Metaphorical Figuration — The New Body
In this group of sculptures I am utilizing the sense of realism that is developed by using body moulds and very articulate casting to make a direct connection to the body.
I want the viewer to relate directly to, and empathize with, the humanness of the component parts. In addition, I am assembling the figurative components into sculptural structures such as a cosmos, egg or vessel.
In these structures the body components are used as symbols such as a finger for touch or a hand for man’s ability to create. With these symbols I am playing with ideas such as creation/ evolution and man's view of nature. We form our view of nature, and indeed the cosmos, in our own image.
The tension between the texture and detail of a casting of an actual body part and the construction of these into an abstract symbolic narrative is central to this series of sculptures.
